The Torah, Week by Week

by Chaia Kravitz

Parashot (parasha, singular), are the weekly portions of the Torah that are studied each Shabbat. Year after year these words are read over in a cycle that accompanies the Feasts of the Lord. Here is a breakdown of the yearly cycle, with Parasha names and Scripture verses. For Messianic Believers, suggested readings from the Brit Chadasha (New Testament) have been included.

Blessing before Reading the Torah portion

Baruch atah Adonai eloheinu melech haolam, ahser bachar banu mikol ha-amin, v'natan lanu et Torato, Baruch atah Adonai, notein haTorah. Amen.

Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of the Universe, who selected us from all the peoples and gave us His Torah. Blessed are You, O Lord, the Giver of the Torah. Amen.

Blessings After Reading the Torah portion

Baruch atah Adonai eloheinu melech ha-olam, ahser natan lanu Torat emet, v'chayei olam nata 'b'toecheinu. Baruch atah Adonai, notein haTorah. Amen.

Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of the Universe, who gave us the Torah of truth and planted everlasting life within us. Blessed are You, O Lord, the Giver of the Torah. Amen.

(These blessings are accompanied by traditional melodies which are available on tape from a Jewish or Messianic Jewish supplier.)
