Paul Wilbur - Lion of Judah

by Chaia Kravitz

Paul Wilbur's latest album, Lion of Judah, is his most far-reaching effort to date.

Lion of Judah is the last in a three-part series of live recordings in Jerusalem during the Feasts of the Lord.

In the tradition of his previous releases Shalom Jerusalem and Jerusalem Arise, Wilbur records live during a Jewish pilgrimage feast, this time being Pentecost (Shavuot), June 11, 2000, live before a large and enthusiastic audience. Like the previous releases, he has a large and talented backup band including several vocalists and numerous instrumentalists.

Where Wilbur departs from his previous recordings, is in his choice of songs. His warm, soaring voice tackles mostly songs by other songwriters who are well-known to worshipping church-goers, such as Lynn DeShazo's "In Your Presence O God." There are none of the classic songs from Israel's Hope (Wilbur's band before he went out on his own) that graced the other two albums in the trilogy. Most of the songs are straight-ahead worship numbers, but some of them definitely have a Middle Eastern feel to them.

Lion of Judah is easily Wilbur's most far-reaching album to date, with appeal to both Messianic and non-Messianic Believers. Wilbur himself is probably the Messianic scene's best-known performer, having recorded five solo albums for Integrity/Hosanna, a major worship label. The album's atmosphere of enthusiastic praise and worship is contagious, and Wilbur is extremely versatile as a performer and worship leader. It's an energetic, Godly way to close out a trilogy that in some ways has brought Messianic music into the mainstream worship arena.
