Glossary of Messianic Terms

I often get emails asking me to explain some of the language used on this site. Here is a glossary of some of the major terms used here. Some of the terms used on this site may not be familiar to all readers. Here is a glossary of Messianic terms. It is by no means exhaustive, but covers the major words used on this site. This list will be updated from time to time. If you have a question about a word not covered here, or you have suggestions about terms to add, please e-mail me.
Adonai - The LORD
Aliyah - Immigration to Israel
Brit Chadesha - Renewed or New Covenent/Testament
D'var Torah - Commentary on the weekly Torah readings
Echad - One; this word is used to refer to the uniqueness of God. It is also used to describe when a man and woman become married (in other words, it is a complicated "one").
Haftorah - A reading from another part of the Tanach after the weekly Torah reading
Hanukkah - The Festival of Lights; a Jewish festival in winter commemorating the Maccabee triumph
Hashem - Literally, "The Name," this is one of the names Jewish people use for God.
Mikvah - Immersion (baptism)
Mishpocha - Family
Moshiach - Messiah Parasha (plural Parashot) - Weekly Torah readings
Rosh HaShanah - The Jewish New Year
Ruach Ha'Kodesh - Holy Spirit
Sha'ul - Paul
Shema (Sh'ma) - A prayer said three times a day by observant Jews which affirms the One-ness of God.
Shofar - A ram's horn blown at Rosh HaShanah used traditionally as a warning sound.
Siddur - Prayerbook containing the liturgy for Shabbat services
Tallit (plural; tallis singular) - Prayer shawl
Talmud - The Oral Law; writings of the Rabbis that are considered holy by Orthodox Jews
Tanach - The Old Covenant/Testament; frequently referred to as the Jewish or Hebrew Bible. It consists of the Torah, Ne'vim (Prophets) and Ketuvim (Writings).
Torah - The first five books of the Tanach; the Five Books of Moses
Yarmulke - Headcovering worn by Jewish males
Yeshua - Jesus
Yeshiva - Jewish seminary school
Yochanan the Immerser - John the Baptist Copyright 2002
