Hermeneutics is the science of interpretation. There are a couple of terms that are used in Biblical interpretation. Exegesis means to critically analyze the Bible. In other words, it means to examine the text with detailed emphasis on context, language, and historical period. On the other hand, eisegesis is adding personal commentary, opinions, and other ideas to Scripture. There are several reasons why accurate Biblical interpretation is important.

Possessing an accurate Biblical interpretation helps both Jewish and Gentile Believers in Jesus to have a balanced perspective on Eschatology (Study of Last Things). There are some well-meaning Believers in Jesus who have sensationalized Biblical Prophecy by adding personal commentary to End-Time events. For example, there are folks who believe the 144,000 Jews from all the tribes of Israel are to be “flaming evangelists.” A careful exegesis of the 144,000 shows they were mentioned three times in the Bible. (See Revelation 7:4ff, 14.1, and 3). Not once is there a mention of them being evangelists.

Interpretation is important concerning Biblical doctrine. For example, some think salvation is by doing good deeds. An exegesis of Ephesians 2:8-9ff shows that salvation is by grace, through faith. Salvation is a gift of God, so no one can boast about working for it. Ephesians 2:10 explains further that we are God’s workmanship, created in Messiah Jesus to do good works. Show your faith by what you do. (See James 2:18b). Without accurate Biblical interpretation one cannot determine what the Bible really means.

Accurately interpreting Bible verses is important when studying the Bible. People need to have clear understanding of Scripture. They must allow Scripture to interpret itself. Compare Scripture with other verses to get the sense of the passage. For example, when studying the Olivet Discourse in Matthew 24-25, compare it with similar passages like Luke 21:5-36. Letting Scripture speak for itself is important in discerning truth from error.

In conclusion, without the guidance of the Holy Spirit, Jewish and Gentile Believers in Jesus cannot discern the Scriptures. Having a clear hermeneutic is important in making sense of Scripture. In Eschatology, people need to be careful to study prophetic passages in their natural context. Possessing an accurate Biblical interpretation helps Believers in Jesus to avoid extremes when trying to understand the Bible. Doctrinal issues can be understood better when a person doesn’t take Scripture out of context. Finally, “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.” (James 1:5 NIV)
